Geelong Rail 150 will be series of displays and events held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of official opening of the Geelong & Melbourne Railway on 25 June 1857.
The railway was built and operated by private enterprise, the Geelong and Melbourne Railway Company. At 64 kilometres, it was the first long distance country railway line in Australia and equalled the combined length of all other railways in the country.
The celebrations will not only look back at railway history of that time, but at the developments that have taken place since 1857 and the role of railways today and into the future.
Displays will be held at Geelong, Lara, Little River, Werribee and Williamstown.
Celebrations will be focussed on the weekend of Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 June, but some displays will extend from the start of June through till late July.
All displays and events will be at or within close walking distance of railway stations. At Geelong, a free shuttle bus service will link the station and more distant attractions on Sunday 24 June.
Visitors are encouraged to travel by rail to the display locations, utilising the frequent V/Line Passenger train services. Heritage diesel and steam trains will also operate on the Geelong line on Sunday 24 June, providing a linkage between the display sites.
Some displays and events are free of charge, others have moderate admission charges. Heritage train services have a variety of charges.
